Empowering Boys for a Balanced Future: Abia Marks International Day of the Boy Child
The Office of the wife of the Governor in collaboration with the Ministry of women affairs, organized a colourful event in Umuahia to commemorate the International Day of the Boy Child.
The celebration brought together government officials, educators, traditional rulers, students, and other stakeholders to advocate for the empowerment, protection, and holistic development of the boy child.

In her welcome address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Aghukwa, emphasized that while significant attention has rightly been given to the girl child over the years, it is equally important to invest in the boy child to raise productive, responsible, and purpose-driven men.

She stressed the need to nurture boys who are intelligent, morally upright, and capable of becoming responsible husbands, fathers, and leaders. According to her, true strength lies not in aggression but in character, discipline, and integrity.
Dr. Aghukwa further called for increased opportunities in skills acquisition, mentorship, education, and personal development to enable boys to excel and contribute meaningfully to society.
Representing the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, the Wife of the Deputy Governor described the celebration as a landmark initiative that reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive child development.

She noted that the theme of this year’s celebration, “Empowering Boys for a Balanced Future,” is both timely and relevant, considering the numerous challenges confronting young boys today, including negative social influences, substance abuse, and violence.
Addressing the boys, she encouraged them to believe in themselves, dream big, work hard, and never underestimate their potential.
She assured them of the continued commitment of the Governor’s wife to the welfare, protection, education, and holistic development of all children in Abia State, regardless of gender.
She also urged parents, teachers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to raise boys who are confident without violence, strong without cruelty, resourceful without selfishness, and successful without compromising their values.
In his goodwill message, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Sir Kelechukwu Nwosu, stated that training and empowering the boy child is crucial to societal growth and development.
He observed that many social vices, including cybercrime, drug abuse, armed robbery, and other criminal activities, stem from the neglect of the boy child. He stressed the need to provide boys with quality education, moral guidance, and skills development opportunities.
Nwosu also highlighted Governor Dr. Alex Otti’s reforms in the education sector, including the recruitment of 10,000 teachers and the allocation of 20 percent of the state’s budget to education, describing the initiatives as significant investments in the future of Abia children.
Delivering the keynote address on the theme, “Empowering the Boy Child for a Balanced Future,” Pastor Ogbonna Samuel of the Living Word ministries described a boy child as “a male child being raised to become a responsible father.”
He stated that every boy carries seeds of greatness and should never be neglected, warning that continued neglect could have far-reaching consequences for society.
According to him, education remains the most effective tool for empowering boys, helping them understand their rights, responsibilities, and place in society.
Pastor Samuel also highlighted the challenges associated with toxic notions of masculinity, where boys are often told to suppress their emotions and face life’s challenges alone.
He advocated giving equal value and opportunities to both boys and girls, stressing that a balanced society can only be achieved when no child is neglected.
He maintained that proper training and moral upbringing of boys would significantly reduce crime rates, noting that many perpetrators of crimes such as armed robbery, internet fraud, and drug abuse are male youths who lacked proper guidance and support.
The cleric emphasized that the responsibility of raising responsible boys rests on families, schools, religious institutions, and society as a whole.
The event also featured several competitions among participating schools.
In the Spelling Bee Competition, Intellectual Giants Christian Academy emerged winner with six points, while Government College Umuahia finished as runner-up with five points. Other participating schools included Trailblazers Academy and Ndume Otuka Secondary School.
In the Quiz Competition, Mayfair Academy emerged winner with five points, Ibeku High School came second with four points, while Government College Umuahia secured third place with three points.
For the Tongue Twister (Okwu Ntabire) Competition, Amuzukwu Secondary School emerged victorious.
Schools that emerged victorious in the various competitions were presented with a learning pad, a dictionary, and a cash prize of ₦30,000 for their school libraries.
Among dignitaries present at the event were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs. Ogechi Betty Oguama; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Prof. Ijeoma Iheukwumere; wives of mayors from across the state, traditional rulers, political appointees, and other stakeholders.
Highlights of the celebration included cultural dance displays, thrilling Ohafia War Dance performances, and musical renditions by participating schools, all of which entertained guests and added colour to the occasion.
The event concluded with a renewed call on parents, educators, and policymakers to invest in the boy child, recognizing his vital role in building a balanced, peaceful, and prosperous society.

The Chairman of the Association of Christian Royal Fathers of Nigeria, His Eminence Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu, has declared November 29 a special day of prayer for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti, and the anticipated re-election of Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The initiative is aimed at seeking divine intervention for Nigeria’s leadership, the continued development of Abia State, and effective representation for the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency.
Eze Ofoegbu, a traditional ruler known for advocating peace and peaceful coexistence, is expected to mobilise Christian traditional rulers and other worshippers to participate in the prayer exercise. The programme will focus on divine wisdom, good governance, national unity, political stability, and sustainable development.
Prayers for Tinubu, Otti and Aguocha
According to the announcement, President Tinubu will be remembered in prayers for divine wisdom, strength, and protection as he continues to lead Nigeria amid the country’s political and economic challenges. The exercise will also seek God’s guidance for the Federal Government in its efforts to promote national development and improve the welfare of citizens.
Governor Alex Otti will equally be a major focus of the intercession, with prayers for the successful implementation of his administration’s development programmes and the continued transformation of Abia State. The prayer initiative highlights the importance of peace, responsible leadership, and policies that improve the lives of residents across the state.
Similarly, the proposed re-election of Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha in 2027 will feature prominently in the prayers. Participants are expected to seek divine direction concerning his political future, alongside continued effective representation, democratic dividends, and the advancement of the interests of constituents across Ikwuano and Umuahia.
Aguocha’s anticipated return to the National Assembly forms part of the broader political conversation surrounding representation and leadership ahead of the next general elections. However, the prayer declaration represents a spiritual expression of support and does not determine the outcome of the electoral process.
Faith, Leadership and Democratic Development
The November 29 prayer day reflects the association’s emphasis on the role of faith in leadership and public service. It is anchored in the belief that political leaders need wisdom, discernment, and a commitment to the welfare of the people to fulfil their responsibilities effectively.
Beyond prayers for individual office holders, the initiative is also expected to encourage reflection on national unity, peaceful political participation, and the need for responsible governance at all levels.
As preparations and political discussions surrounding the 2027 general elections continue to develop, the proposed prayer exercise offers an opportunity for Christian traditional rulers and other faithful to pray for peace, stability, and constructive political engagement in Nigeria and Abia State.
Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu’s announcement adds a spiritual dimension to the growing political discussions ahead of 2027, placing national leadership, Abia’s development, and representation in Ikwuano/Umuahia at the centre of the planned intercession.
The success of the exercise will depend on participation and the collective commitment of those involved in the stated objectives of prayer, peace, good governance and sustainable development.

PRISCILLA OTTI SUPPORTS 1,000 INDIGENT ABIA PUPILS WITH BACK-TO-SCHOOL MATERIALS,SAYS BACKGROUND NOT A BARRIER TO GREATNESS
The Safe Tent Care Initiative, a pet project of Abia State Governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, has distributed back-to-school materials to 1,000 indigent pupils from 50 public schools across the state’s 17 local government areas, as she declared that background should not be a barrier to greatness.

The intervention, organised in collaboration with the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), took place at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, as part of efforts to ease the financial burden on parents, encourage academic excellence and improve access to education for vulnerable children, particularly those in rural communities.

Speaking at the event, the founder of the Safe Tent Care Initiative, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, said the programme was designed to support families struggling to provide essential educational materials for their children and ensure that pupils returned to school adequately equipped and motivated to learn.
She explained that the initiative reached 1,000 pupils from 50 public schools across the state’s 17 local government areas, with particular attention to children from underserved rural communities.
According to her, the beneficiaries were selected from disadvantaged families, with consideration given to pupils’ academic performance and efforts to encourage educational excellence.

Mrs. Otti noted that the programme was an extension of the initiative’s commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable children and supporting families facing economic difficulties.
She recalled that the previous edition also provided assistance to pupils and expressed hope that the programme would expand to reach more than 2,000 children in subsequent editions, subject to available resources.
The governor’s wife commended the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, head teachers and other education stakeholders for their collaboration in identifying beneficiaries and ensuring the successful implementation of the programme.
She also acknowledged the contributions of individuals and organisations committed to supporting underserved children, including the Peter NWachukwu Foundation, whose work, she said, inspired her to pursue similar humanitarian interventions.
Mrs. Otti further encouraged parents and guardians to remain committed to their children’s education, while urging pupils to be disciplined, hardworking, respectful and determined to achieve their dreams regardless of their backgrounds.
She also called on individuals, businesses and organisations to support the initiative’s humanitarian programmes, announcing plans for the Rising Gems Talent Show and Gospel Music Concert to raise funds for vulnerable children and other beneficiaries across the state.
In her remarks, the Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, Lady Ezihe Lydia Onuoha, described the programme as a demonstration of the importance of collective responsibility in advancing children’s education.

She commended Mrs. Otti for establishing the initiative and consistently supporting vulnerable children, noting that the provision of school materials would help improve pupils’ confidence, encourage learning and ease some of the financial pressures on their families.
According to her, every child deserves access to the resources and encouragement necessary to learn, excel and fulfil their potential, irrespective of family circumstances or geographical location.

Lady Onuoha said the initiative aligned with the educational transformation agenda of Governor Alex Otti’s administration, which prioritises quality education, human capital development, inclusiveness and improved learning outcomes.
She urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the materials provided, remain committed to their studies and demonstrate good character in their schools and communities.
The ASUBEB chairman also celebrated Abia pupils who recently represented Nigeria at the 2026 International School Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, where they reportedly emerged overall champions, winning four major trophies and 12 medals.
She attributed the achievement to the dedication of the pupils, their teachers and coaches, as well as the support provided by the state government and other stakeholders.
Lady Onuoha noted that the accomplishment demonstrated the potential of children attending public schools to compete successfully on the international stage when given the necessary support and opportunities.
She called for sustained collaboration among government agencies, parents, communities, development organisations and private individuals to ensure that no child was left behind in the pursuit of quality education.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Felix, described the intervention as an important contribution to efforts to address the challenges faced by vulnerable children and low-income households.

ASUBEB Executive Chairman
She said poverty extended beyond inadequate household income, as it could also limit children’s access to education, healthcare and other essential services.
According to her, supporting children’s education and strengthening household welfare are important components of social protection, particularly for families at risk of being excluded from opportunities for development.
Mrs Felix commended Mrs. Otti for championing the initiative and called for stronger partnerships among government ministries, schools, development partners, civil society organisations and the private sector to expand support for vulnerable families.
She urged the beneficiaries to remain hardworking, respect their parents and teachers, and understand that their present circumstances should not determine their future achievements.
The commissioner also encouraged parents and teachers to continue guiding the children, stressing that their collective efforts were essential to building a generation equipped with the knowledge, skills and values needed to contribute meaningfully to society.
The event attracted the wife of the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Adaeze Emetu; the Principal Secretary and Chief Strategy Officer to the Governor, Mr Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education, Mr. Kenechukwu Nwosu.

In her vote of thanks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Chinenye Nwaka, expressed appreciation to Mrs. Otti for extending educational support to children from disadvantaged families across the state’s 17 local government areas.
She said the initiative had provided encouragement to pupils and relief to parents, adding that the intervention went beyond the distribution of school bags and books to represent an investment in the future of Abia children.

included cultural dance performances by pupils of Ndume Otuka Primary School, a spelling bee competition and various fun games that entertained guests and created an atmosphere of excitement.

The programme ended with renewed calls for stronger partnerships to support children from underserved communities and ensure that financial diff
iculties do not prevent them from accessing educational opportunities.
