Concerned Abia Youth Initiative’s Inaugurates State, LGA, Ward Executives, Endorses Gov. Otti for 2027
A new chapter in youth driven civic participation unfolded in Umuahia on Friday as the Concerned Abia Youths Initiative (CAYI), a non partisan advocacy group focused on governance, accountability and youth development, formally inaugurated its state executive council and grassroots leadership structure across Abia State.
The inauguration ceremony, held in the Abia State capital, brought together representatives from all seventeen local government areas, ward coordinators, community leaders, professionals, youth advocates and stakeholders from various sectors of society.
The exercise was conducted by legal practitioner Barrister Kenneth Ibedu, who administered the inauguration process and formally ushered in the organisation’s newly constituted leadership at state, local government and ward levels.
Speaking shortly after the inauguration, the State Coordinator of the organisation, Chimdi Kanu, described the inauguration as a significant milestone in the group’s mission to promote good governance, justice, equity and meaningful youth participation in public affairs.
According to him, the initiative was established to mobilise young people towards constructive civic engagement while supporting policies and programmes capable of improving the welfare and future prospects of youths across Abia State.
He explained that beyond political participation, the organisation has previously undertaken campaigns encouraging voter registration, combating drug abuse, promoting civic education and sensitising young people on their roles in democratic governance.
“Our focus is on youth development, good governance, justice and equity. We believe young people should actively contribute to building society rather than merely seeking short term benefits. We want to encourage initiatives that improve lives and create sustainable opportunities for future generations,” Kanu said.
The event also featured a press conference during which members of the organisation announced their endorsement of Governor Alex Otti for the 2027 governorship election.
In a statement presented on behalf of the group’s leadership, the organisation said its decision followed what it described as extensive consultations, independent assessments and evaluations of governance outcomes across the state.
The statement outlined several projects and policy initiatives undertaken by the current administration, including road reconstruction projects, healthcare investments, educational infrastructure, market renewal programmes, rural development initiatives and efforts aimed at industrial growth and economic revitalisation.
Among the projects cited were ongoing road rehabilitation works across different parts of the state, developments in healthcare infrastructure, educational facility upgrades, agricultural support initiatives and proposed strategic investments designed to stimulate economic expansion and attract private sector participation.
The group stated that these developments informed its decision to support continuity in governance beyond the current administration’s first tenure.
CAYI’s leadership argued that sustained implementation of ongoing projects would contribute to long term economic growth, improved public services and enhanced opportunities for young people.
Chief Convener of the organisation, Mazi Obinna Jeff Okafor, was also recognised during the event for his role in mobilising members and promoting youth centred advocacy. Organisers said the initiative includes contributions from both residents and members of the Abia diaspora who share a common interest in governance, accountability and development.
The inauguration of the Concerned Abia Youths Initiative marks an important development in youth driven civic engagement within Abia State. Beyond establishing a statewide organisational structure, the event underscores the increasing willingness of young people to participate in governance conversations, advocate for accountability and contribute to policy discussions affecting their communities. The group’s endorsement of Governor Alex Otti also signals the growing influence of youth based organisations in shaping political narratives ahead of future elections.
The gathering also featured contributions from community leaders, professionals and stakeholders who encouraged young people to embrace productive engagement, leadership development and civic responsibility.
Participants emphasised the importance of maintaining developmental momentum irrespective of political activities ahead of future elections, stressing that governance and service delivery should remain priorities throughout the electoral cycle.
They noted that the inauguration reflects a growing trend of organised youth participation in governance discussions and policy advocacy across Nigeria, particularly as young citizens increasingly seek greater involvement in decision making processes affecting their communities.

For many attendees, the event represented more than an organisational ceremony. It served as a platform for discussing the future of youth participation, governance accountability and development priorities within Abia State.
As political activities gradually begin to shape conversations ahead of the next electoral cycle, the emergence of groups such as CAYI highlights the evolving role of youth organisations in influencing public discourse, civic engagement and democratic participation.

Abia@35: Obi Aguocha Hails Otti’s Government for Changing Abia’s Development Narrative
The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has commended the administration of Governor Alex Otti for what he described as a significant transformation in Abia State’s development trajectory, saying the government has changed the narrative of the state within its 35 years of creation.
Aguocha made the remarks in his message marking the 35th anniversary of the creation of Abia State, noting that the anniversary provides an opportunity for Abians to reflect on the state’s journey, acknowledge its challenges and celebrate the progress recorded over the years.
According to him, the emergence of Governor Otti has brought a renewed sense of direction to the state, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, urban renewal, road construction, healthcare, education and public-sector reforms.
He said the ongoing transformation across major parts of the state demonstrates that Abia is gradually moving towards a new phase of development driven by deliberate planning, accountability and a commitment to improving the lives of its people.
Aguocha particularly commended the Otti administration for prioritising critical infrastructure, describing the rehabilitation and construction of roads across the state as a major step towards opening up communities, improving connectivity and stimulating economic activities.
He also noted that investments in healthcare, education and other sectors were essential to building a productive population and creating an environment where businesses and individuals can thrive.
The lawmaker said the 35th anniversary should not only be viewed as a celebration of the past but also as an opportunity to renew the collective commitment of Abians to building a more prosperous and united state.
He urged Abians to support initiatives capable of advancing the state’s development, stressing that government alone cannot achieve sustainable transformation without the cooperation and participation of citizens.
Aguocha expressed optimism that with sustained commitment to good governance, infrastructure development, human capital investment and economic reforms, Abia would continue to make significant progress and strengthen its position as one of Nigeria’s emerging economic centres.
He congratulated Governor Otti, the government and people of Abia State on the 35th anniversary, while paying tribute to past administrations and citizens whose contributions, he said, had helped shape the state since its creation.
He said the anniversary represents both a celebration of Abia’s journey and a reminder of the responsibility of the present generation to leave behind a stronger, more developed and prosperous state for future generations.

Aguocha: Otti’s Government Has Changed Abia’s Development Narrative
The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has commended Governor Alex Otti’s administration for what he described as significant progress in Abia State, saying the Labour Party-led government has changed the state’s development narrative.
Aguocha made the remarks while speaking during a radio programme on Rapid FM, Umuahia, where he reviewed developments under the present administration.
The lawmaker said Governor Otti’s performance should be assessed against the condition of Abia before the administration assumed office, arguing that the government had recorded significant progress within its first three years.
“No government has come into power that has done better than the present Labour Party-led government,” Aguocha said.
He particularly cited the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road as one of the administration’s major interventions. According to him, the road had suffered years of neglect until the Abia State Government took over the project as a matter of urgent public importance.
Aguocha commended Governor Otti for prioritising the project despite the fact that the state would have to await reimbursement from the Federal Government.
He said the decision demonstrated the governor’s willingness to act in the interest of the people rather than wait indefinitely for federal intervention.
The lawmaker also pointed to other infrastructure projects across the state, including road construction, school projects and erosion-control interventions, describing them as evidence of the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and living conditions.
Aguocha maintained that the government’s achievements should be measured against the condition of the state before it assumed office, rather than by political considerations.
He described himself as a passionate advocate and defender of the Labour Party-led administration, insisting that the government had made significant progress in changing Abia’s development trajectory.
According to him, the ongoing infrastructure projects and other interventions demonstrate a new approach to governance focused on development and improving the lives of residents.
