Outrage in Oyo as NUT, Residents Stage Mass Protest Over Abducted Schoolchildren, Teachers

Following a directive from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), residents of Oyo State have taken to the streets in a mass protest, demanding the immediate release of dozens of school children and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.

The NUT had directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, more than two weeks after heavily armed gunmen launched coordinated attacks on three schools in the Ogbomoso area.

The attackers, who stormed the schools on May 15, abducted 39 pupils and students, some as young as two years old, as well as seven teachers, including Mrs. Rachael Alamu, Principal of Community High School, Esiele.

Reports indicate that one of the abducted teachers has been beheaded by the kidnappers, heightening outrage and calls for urgent government intervention.
