The Trump administration released hundreds of thousands of pages of records on Monday about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. despite concerns from the civil rights leader’s family.

“The American people have waited nearly sixty years to see the full scope of the federal government’s investigation into Dr King’s assassination,” Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said in a statement.

“We are ensuring that no stone is left unturned in our mission to deliver complete transparency on this pivotal and tragic event in our nation’s history.”

Gabbard said more than 230,000 pages of documents were being released and were being published “with minimal redactions for privacy reasons.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order after taking office declassifying files on the 1960s assassinations of president John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert F. Kennedy and King.

The National Archives released records from John F. Kennedy’s November 1963 assassination in March and files related to the June 1968 murder of Robert F. Kennedy in April.

King was assassinated in April 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. James Earl Ray was convicted of the murder and died in prison in 1998, but King’s children have expressed doubts that he was the assassin.

In a statement on Monday, King’s two surviving children, Martin Luther King III and Bernice King, said they “support transparency and historical accountability” but were concerned the records could be used for “attacks on our father’s legacy.”

The civil rights leader was the target during his lifetime of an “invasive, predatory, and deeply disturbing disinformation and surveillance campaign” orchestrated by then-FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, they said in a joint statement.

The FBI campaign was intended to “discredit, dismantle and destroy Dr. King’s reputation and the broader American Civil Rights Movement,” they said. “These actions were not only invasions of privacy, but intentional assaults on the truth.”

“We ask those who engage with the release of these files to do so with empathy, restraint, and respect for our family’s continuing grief,” they said.

The Warren Commission that investigated the shooting of John F. Kennedy determined it was carried out by a former Marine sharpshooter, Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone.

That formal conclusion has done little, however, to quell speculation that a more sinister plot was behind Kennedy’s murder in Dallas, Texas, and the slow release of the government files added fuel to various conspiracy theories.

President Kennedy’s younger brother, Robert, a former attorney general, was assassinated while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian-born Jordanian, was convicted of his murder and is serving a life sentence in a prison in California.

United States President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of a regime change in Iran as the tension between the Middle East country and Israel escalates.

Trump bared his mind in a post on his social media page after the US bombed Iranian nuclear facilities – an action that has drawn the country into the ongoing crisis between Iran and Israel.

“It’s not politically correct to use the term, ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change MIGA!!!” he posted on his Truth Social platform.

His remarks also came after other top US officials stressed that toppling Iran’s leaders was not the aim of the US military action.

The US had carried out attacks in Iran after a week of hostilities between Israel and Iran.

The actions echoed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s sentiments of wiping out Iran’s nuclear research programme.

US allies, including the United Kingdom (UK), said the strikes eliminated the threat of nuclear attacks.

But Iran has repeatedly denied plans of building a nuclear arsenal.

Trump said the strikes caused “monumental damage”, but Iran downplayed the intensity.

Iran vowed that the US strikes would have “everlasting consequences”.

On Monday, Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes at a US air base in Qatar.

Trump has repeatedly asked Iran to surrender.

An Israeli Air Force pilot Asaf Dagan committed suicide and left a note to his mother. “Everyone not dead or injured is mentally damaged,” a parent of a soldier who committed suicide has said.

Asaf Dagan, a former Israeli Air Force pilot and career officer, died by suicide on Wednesday at the age of 37. His passing has prompted his mother, Miri, to call for a military funeral in honor of his years of service. In his note to his mother, Dagan referenced his deep struggle with mental health following his military career, a sentiment shared by other families of soldiers facing similar challenges. He left 4 young kids at home to go and drive around in D9 destroying everything in his path.

Dagan served for nearly two decades in various capacities within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). His service included the paratroopers, the air force, and Unit 8200, an elite intelligence unit. Although he was never formally diagnosed, Miri believes her son suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an experience she says he could not fully express. “I noticed he was not himself anymore,” Miri told Ynet, recalling how he became increasingly isolated, sensitive to noise, and withdrawn from family and friends.

Asaf’s role in the air force eventually shifted to administrative duties at IDF Headquarters in Tel Aviv. According to Miri, he continued to participate in weekly reserve duty even after his active service ended, yet his condition worsened over time. Miri recounted her persistent efforts to seek help for Asaf: “I reached out to the air force and insisted that he should no longer be allowed to fly,” she explained. She claims that after he was grounded, he continued to struggle without the resources he needed.

Families of soldiers facing mental health challenges following service have increasingly sought recognition for their loved ones’ suffering, whether formally diagnosed or not. Miri’s appeal to the IDF for a military funeral for Asaf emphasizes her wish to honor her son’s memory and the complex psychological effects of military service.
