The Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District in the Senate, Austin Akobundu, has emerged as the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election.
Akobundu clinched the party’s ticket after polling 653 votes as the sole candidate in the election.
The lawmaker was affirmed as the consensus candidate of the ADC through a voice vote during the primary election conducted in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Thursday.
Addressing party members shortly after his emergence, Akobundu praised members for standing firm despite challenges.
“This has been a journey for the tough and convinced, not for the weak. You have made today possible. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support,” he said.
He noted that doubts about the party’s stability had proved unfounded, pointing to the smooth conduct of the primaries from polling units to local governments and constituencies.
“Candidates for state constituencies and federal constituencies were elected unopposed, which is a sign of shared purpose and a rejection of rancour,” he added.
He thanked INEC for its role as an unbiased umpire and acknowledged the security agencies for ensuring a peaceful process.
“This exercise was witnessed by INEC officials and monitored by security agencies, including the police, DSS, and other services.
“I retired from the Army, so I know what it means to serve quietly so others can sleep with their eyes closed,” he said.
He also thanked the organising committee and party leaders who worked through the night to ensure a seamless exercise under the directive of the National Working Committee.
He promised to give a full account of his stewardship in the coming months, noting that although he joined the Senate six months late, he has delivered measurable results in two and a half years.
“I have one and a half years more to account for before we talk about the next term. Expect more to come your way,” he said.
He announced plans to visit local government areas for familiarization and mobilisation and urged continued support as the party prepares for the general elections.
Members of the African Democratic Congress in the state commended the party leadership for their unity and resolve following the peaceful conduct of the primaries across state and federal constituencies.
