The 2027 Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Abia State, Chief Eric Opah, has pledged to deploy the resources of the state for the development and benefit of Abia people if elected.

Opah made the pledge during the official unveiling of the party’s Deputy Governorship candidate, Dr Godswill Agu Egbe, at the APC State Secretariat in Umuahia.

He assured that his administration would uphold transparency, honesty and integrity in the management of public resources, stressing that government projects would not be inflated under his watch.

According to him, he took more than two weeks to carefully assess Agu Egbe before settling for him as his running mate, noting that the Deputy Governorship position requires someone who can work harmoniously with the principal.

Opah said he examined Agu Egbe’s professional background and contacted his former employer, BUA International, to obtain an independent assessment of his character and competence. He added that he also consulted party leaders before the final decision was reached.

He described Agu Egbe as a man of integrity who would make both the APC and Abia State proud, adding that the Deputy Governorship candidate had fully aligned with the party’s manifesto and vision for the state.

The APC Governorship candidate said his government would review the existing tax regime in the state, create employment opportunities and ensure that public funds were judiciously applied.

He reiterated that the party was entering the 2027 election with the determination to win and deliver a government that would produce tangible results for the people.

The APC State Chairman, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, formally presented Agu Egbe to members of the State Working Committee and the State Executive Council, describing him as a candidate with the goodwill of the people.

In his response, Agu Egbe expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him by Chief Eric Opah and the party leadership.

He pledged his total loyalty to the leadership of the party and promised to work in accordance with the decisions of his principal, while aligning himself with the APC manifesto and the vision of the Governorship candidate.

Agu Egbe said he was passionate about the APC and would work with Opah to achieve the party’s objectives, including securing victory for the party in the 2027 elections.

He also pledged to support the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and work towards ensuring that Abia State records a decisive victory for the APC.

Speaking during an interview, Agu Egbe disclosed that his involvement in active politics had prepared him for the responsibility ahead, noting that his political journey had taken him through the APP, CPC and APC.

He said he shared a common vision with his principal, Opah and would support him in delivering on that vision, adding that the major difference his administration would make would be measured by the results it produced.

Agu Egbe maintained that Abia people deserved better governance and expressed confidence that the APC ticket would provide the leadership required to achieve that objective.

Meanwhile, Dr Godswill Agu Egbe was born 57 years ago to the family of Mr. Pliny Igwe Egbe and Mrs. Anna Nnenna Egbe of Ameeke-Elu, Ovim, in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.

He is a Project Management and Financial Sector Specialist with more than 27 years of professional experience spanning development finance, pension administration, agribusiness development, institutional capacity building and strategic business advisory services.

Agu Egbe has held senior leadership and technical advisory positions across consulting, financial services and development-focused institutions in Nigeria and Ghana.

He is the immediate past Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sane-Konsult International Limited, where he provided strategic leadership in enterprise development, project management, Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL), as well as institutional advisory services.

He previously served as Deputy General Manager and Project Manager at BUA International, where he was involved in strategic initiatives focused on cotton value-chain development and industrial cluster projects.

Over the years, Agu Egbe has provided technical support to financial institutions, development programmes and agribusiness initiatives under organisations including USAID/Connexus Corporation and the African Development Bank Group.

His areas of expertise include agricultural finance, business development, risk management, operational planning, stakeholder engagement and institutional strengthening. He is also a researcher with publications covering financial mathematics, pension systems and financial inclusion.

2027: OKORONKWO DECLARES ISUIKWUATO STATE CONSTITUENCY BID, VOWS TO CHANGE NARRATIVE

Hon. Victor Okoronkwo, an aspirant for the Isuikwuato State Constituency in the 2027 general elections, has declared that the time has come for him to join the race and work towards addressing the lingering challenges facing the area.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, the technocrat-turned-politician said that, as a son born and bred in Isuikwuato, he had watched problems persist for years without being adequately addressed by successive representatives.

He said his friends and age-grade members had, for the past four years, urged him to contest, telling him to stop complaining and return home to do better. He added that although he delayed his decision to contest previously, he believed now was the right time to launch his political ambition.

Okoronkwo, who is running on the platform of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), said his alignment with the ideology of the party’s principal, Mr. Peter Obi, whom he described as a man of integrity, convinced him that the NDC was the right platform for Isuikwuato.

Hon. Victor Okoronkwo said he was not a politician in the conventional Nigerian sense but a technocrat who had been contributing to the development of Isuikwuato long before declaring his political ambition.

He disclosed that, over the past four years, he had been paying stipends to widows, single mothers and people from poor households on every market day, a gesture he said had given them hope and relief.

He also said he had paid medical bills for individuals, awarded scholarships to young people, paid for shops and businesses, and trained and equipped youths in various skills.

According to him, the people of Isuikwuato could attest to these interventions.

ABSU REOPENS DISCIPLINARY CASE AGAINST PROF. NWAEZE WEEKS AFTER LIFTING SUSPENSION

…Sources allege plan to dismiss economist weeks after suspension was lifted under ASUU pressure

Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has referred Professor Nnamdi Chinwendu Nwaeze to its Governing Council Staff Disciplinary Committee, weeks after lifting his suspension over social media posts criticising the welfare and remuneration of lecturers.

Nwaeze, a Professor of Development Economics in the Department of Economics, is scheduled to appear before the committee at 10:30 am today, Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The development comes about six weeks after the university suspended him over his public criticism of poor working conditions, unpaid salaries, and promotion arrears. Those grievances led the ASUU branch at ABSU to begin a total and indefinite strike on August 11, 2026.

It also follows Governor Alex Otti’s public apology over the strike, in which he acknowledged that the lecturers’ demands were legitimate.

Documents released to the press show that the process against Nwaeze continued even after his suspension was lifted, and was expanded to include an allegation of “Duty Abscondment.” According to a September 10 memo, signed by Uka U. Uka, Deputy Registrar and Secretary of the Panel on Duty Abscondment, it was titled “Invitation To A Discussion.” It said the panel was investigating “Duty Abscondment and Social Media Commentaries against the interest of the University.”

The meeting was fixed for September 16 at the Board Room of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, with copies to the panel chairman and the Head of the Department of Economics.

The September 30th memo, signed by Acting Registrar Dr. (Mrs.) J.C. Nwankwo showed the matter had reached the Governing Council Staff Disciplinary Committee. “You are invited to appear before the Governing Council Staff Disciplinary Committee meeting scheduled as follows,” it read. The memo was also copied to the Pro-Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor and other principal officers.

Sources say the proceedings could end in his dismissal, alleging he is being targeted for his outspokenness and objective criticism of the treatment of academic staff.

Nwaeze’s supporters have dismissed the duty abscondment allegation. They insist he completed his semester teaching, submitted students’ results, and supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students as required.

They describe the continued proceedings as an attempt to punish him for raising concerns about lecturers’ welfare, especially after the governor himself admitted the grievances behind the strike were legitimate.

Several news outlets reported on August 13th that ABSU had suspended Nwaeze over his social media posts. In a statement, the university’s Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Officer, Chijioke Nwogu, said the posts were “inimical to the interests of the University and uncomplimentary to the Visitor of the University.”

The university said it had also set up an investigative panel and that the suspension would take immediate effect “pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Nwaeze made the posts while commenting on the strike. He alleged that:

* ABSU lecturers are among the lowest-paid in Nigeria and are still on the 2009 ASUU/FG salary structure.

* Lecturers promoted between 2023 and 2026 have not been paid at their new ranks.

* Some academic staff have gone as long as 44 months without salaries.

* Salary arrears are unpaid, union dues deducted from workers are not remitted to ASUU, and lecturers have never received Earned Academic Allowances.

* About N163 million in cooperative deductions is owed by the government.

“Let me be blunt at this time. Did you know that most professors in ABSU earn less than N400k monthly?” he wrote. He compared professors’ pay with that of commercial tricycle operators, saying a Keke driver earning N15,000 daily could make more than a professor. He also claimed that over 85 per cent of lecturers no longer drive their cars and that staff were effectively subsidising the government.

“All men of good conscience should plead with the Abia State government to pay ASUU-ABSU staff their due pay and end this strike within the shortest time,” he added.

After his suspension, he said: “In life, somebody must pay the price for the liberation of others.” He added: “Don’t sympathize with me; instead, direct your sympathy to the paymasters.”

The proceedings come against the backdrop of Governor Otti’s August 28 apology. Speaking at a public lecture at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, he said the strike was avoidable.

The strike followed unresolved welfare issues and a wider ASUU directive over the “haphazard implementation” of the 2025 renegotiated federal-state agreement.

Otti said the lecturers’ demands were legitimate and had been approved, but bureaucratic delays and administrative bottlenecks stopped prompt implementation. “I want to, on this podium, apologise to Abia State University as well. That strike was avoidable. The reality is that the buck stops here. So, we failed. I failed. I failed them,” he said.

Following pressure from the ABSU ASUU branch, the university lifted Nwaeze’s suspension, though management maintained its investigation would continue.

The university has not disclosed which specific posts it considers inimical to its interests or uncomplimentary to the governor. It has also not publicly stated the outcome of its investigation into his posts, nor explained the circumstances behind the new duty abscondment allegation.

It has likewise not responded to concerns from commentators and stakeholders about the multiple investigations.
