Management of Abia Hotels Raises Alarm Over Alleged Illegal Sale of Over ₦600 Million Assets Amid Pending Court Case.
The management of Abia Hotels Ltd has raised an alarm over the alleged illegal sale of personal assets belonging to Investment Guarantee Ltd, the company that built and managed the hotel.
Recall that the management of the hotel instituted legal proceedings against the Abia State Government over what it described as the illegal sealing and the demolition of the hotel, a property that was duly and legally contracted to Investment Guarantee Ltd under a 25-year lease agreement backed by a legally binding contract executed in 2013 to build and manage and protected by a 99 years Certificate of Occupancy.
Despite the matter being pending before a competent court, the Alex Otti administration, in November 2025, allegedly proceeded with the Sealing and the demolition of the hotel without regard to a subsisting court process where both parties have duly joined issues and without any valid or legal agreement with the management. The government also restricted the management’s access to the premises, preventing them from removing their movable assets valued at over ₦600 million.
In an SOS letter sent to newsmen, the management of the hotel today raised fresh concerns over the alleged looting and sale of their personal belongings and operational assets, including generators, television sets, air conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, fans, cookers, water production machines, ice cream machines, industrial baking machines, certificates, and other valuable items.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of Investment Guarantee Ltd, Hon. Randie Ukawoko, who is currently in the United States on health grounds:
“The Abia State Government sealed our hotel in Umuahia and partly destroyed the property. We responded by instituting legal proceedings, and the matter remains pending before a competent court and both parties have been in constant attendance. Notably, this latest escalation is particularly troubling because it comes shortly after the government made what now appears to have been a pretentious move toward an out-of-court settlement through some of its officials.”
He further stated:”We were never allowed to remove our valuables and operational equipment, including three heavy-duty generators and other personal properties, from the premises. At the time, the Chairman and CEO were away in the United States on health grounds, leaving behind critical personal and family documents, including degree certificates, awards, law books, and other irreplaceable records.
“It is truly astonishing and deeply disappointing that while we exercised restraint and pursued a peaceful resolution, a crowd invaded the hotel last week, in the full presence of police officers and men of the Abia State Vigilante security force, and was seen looting and stealing our properties. Now, the state has gone even further by embarking on the sale of our assets.”
“These actions are excessive and carried out in clear bad faith. They demonstrate a regrettable disregard for the authority of the court and the fundamental principles of fairness and due process. No responsible government should treat a legitimate business or any citizen in this manner, especially after initiating discussions toward an amicable settlement.”
According to him, the management decided to speak out because “silence would only embolden further injustice.”
“This is not merely about our hotel; it is about whether private property rights, court processes, and good-faith negotiations still mean anything in Abia State.
“To members of the public, eyewitnesses, and all people of conscience: if you witnessed the sealing of the hotel, the partial demolition, last week’s looting and theft, or any attempts to dispose of our properties, or if you possess videos, photographs, or any other evidence, please preserve and share them. The truth is most powerful when it is documented.
“Just yesterday, July 6, 2026, the government advertised the sale of the premises to the public for the development of a housing estate, inviting interested persons to purchase. We consider it necessary to notify the general public that this property remains the subject of pending litigation, so prospective buyers are fully aware of the legal implications.”
Ukawoko maintained that the management remains fully committed to the legal process and the rule of law, expressing confidence that justice, though delayed, will ultimately prevail.
He called on the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and the relevant authorities to intervene immediately, halt the alleged sale of the assets, and allow due process to take its full course.
According to him, the people of Abia deserve a government that respects the rule of law rather than one that appears to bend it to its will. He also urged members of the public to resist the temptation of purchasing properties that are the subject of ongoing litigation, warning of the legal consequences that may arise.
It would be recalled that the Alex Otti led Labour Party government in Abia State moved to seal and demolish the hotel following the hosting of an APC rally for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the hotel premises by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representative, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu. This latest action runs counter to the Governor’s public statement at flag off of the construction of the Radisson Blue Hotel Aba that he was replicating the same hotel at the Abia hotel Umuahia premises this year.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CALLS FOR END TO IMPUNITY, UNLAWFUL ABDUCTIONS, DETENTION, KILLINGS IN SOUTH-EAST
Amnesty International has called on governments, security agencies and other stakeholders to take urgent steps to end alleged unlawful abductions, arbitrary detention, torture and killings by security operatives in the South-East.
The call was made in Umuahia, Abia State, during the re-launch of Amnesty International Nigeria’s human rights reports, including “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria” and “Tiger Base of Atrocities: Human Rights Violations by Nigeria Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Owerri.”
In her opening remarks, Benedicta Ofili, Finance and Office Manager at Amnesty International Nigeria, welcomed government representatives, civil society organisations, lawyers, activists, security officials and community leaders to the event.
Ofili said Amnesty International, as an independent global human rights movement, is committed to research, advocacy and mobilisation aimed at documenting human rights abuses, protecting human dignity and ensuring accountability.
She said the organisation’s report documented at least 1,844 deaths between 2021 and mid-2023 amid violence involving non-state armed groups, state-backed outfits and security operations across the South-East.
She also highlighted allegations of arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearances, extortion and deaths in custody, particularly involving the Anti-Kidnapping Unit popularly known as Tiger Base.
According to her, insecurity has also had significant socio-economic consequences, including displacement, disruption of education, loss of livelihoods and restrictions on freedom of movement arising from sit-at-home orders.
Ofili called for independent investigations into alleged human rights violations, prosecution of suspected perpetrators, reparations for victims and their families, and stronger accountability by state and federal authorities.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abia State, Barr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, represented by Barr. Chinenye Onyemanonu, said the Abia State Government has zero tolerance for human rights violations and abuses.

He explained that although the Ministry of Justice cannot direct the police on how to carry out their duties, the government has established mechanisms to monitor and address cases of alleged human rights violations.
According to him, complaints referred to the Office of the Attorney General are forwarded to the Citizens’ Rights Department for investigation and appropriate action.
He cited a recent case involving a family whose members were allegedly detained for more than six months, resulting in one of the daughters losing an academic year. He said the Ministry intervened by engaging the affected persons and making recommendations for appropriate action.
Barr. Uwanna urged stakeholders to sustain collaboration in the protection of human rights and commended the administration of Governor Alex Otti for what he described as significant reforms in the justice sector.
During the presentation of “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria,” Amnesty International examined alleged human rights abuses involving the military, Department of State Services (DSS), police and Ebubeagu security personnel between 2016 and 2024, with particular focus on incidents recorded from 2021 to 2024.
The organisation said it had documented more than 1,800 deaths across the region, as well as cases of people allegedly abducted or forcibly disappeared after being accused of links to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The report also highlighted the impact of insecurity on livelihoods, education and freedom of movement, particularly in Abia and other parts of the South-East.
Amnesty International further raised concerns over alleged abuses at the Tiger Base/Tiger Gate detention facility in Imo State, where some persons arrested in Abia were reportedly transferred.
The organisation said it interviewed 23 former detainees, including 14 women, and documented allegations of torture, poor detention conditions and deaths in custody. It said three of those interviewed reportedly died following their detention.
Amnesty International called for investigations into the alleged abuses, improved detention conditions and accountability for anyone found responsible.
Some relatives of persons allegedly abducted by security operatives also shared emotional accounts of their loved ones’ arrests and prolonged disappearance.
Miriam Onyema, in tears, recalled how her husband, Kingsley Chinedu, was allegedly arrested on April 25, 2021, at Hospital Junction in Imo State. She said repeated efforts to locate him or secure his release proved unsuccessful after he was allegedly labelled an IPOB member.
Esther Chinedu said her husband, Pastor Godspower Chinedu, was arrested in 2022 and that the family had not seen him since. She said several attempts to locate him at police detention facilities had been unsuccessful.
Caroline Chukwuma also narrated how her husband, Chukwuma Nwokike, was allegedly abducted in 2021 at St. Paul Junction, Aba, and detained at the CPS Aba. She said she and her lawyers were denied access to him and were later informed that he had been transferred to a detention facility in Abuja.
Chinwendu Chidiebere said her husband, Chidiebere Ekwe, was arrested at his workshop in Aba on June 22, 2021, and taken to CPS Aba, where the family was allegedly denied access to him.
An elderly man, Nicolas Ejekwu, tearfully recounted the arrest of his two sons, Obinna and Onyebuchi, by soldiers at his home. He said he later received information that they had allegedly been tortured and killed and that their bodies were taken to the Federal Medical Centre mortuary, Umuahia.
He also revealed that more than 50 bodies of youths allegedly killed by security agencies on suspicion of being members of IPOB were found at the mortuary.
Cecilia Nmaoche also said her son, Christian Ifeanyi, was allegedly abducted by security operatives in 2022 and had not been seen or heard from since.
The relatives appealed to Amnesty International and the government to help locate their loved ones and ensure that anyone arrested is either released or brought before a competent court rather than being held for years without trial.
A human rights activist, Samuel Agwu, who spoke on behalf of more than 30 persons allegedly subjected to unlawful detention, called on Amnesty International Nigeria and other human rights organisations to intensify efforts to address alleged human rights violations in the South-East.
Agwu said he had facilitated the release of several persons allegedly detained on suspicion of being members of IPOB.
He alleged that many people arrested by security agencies in the region had been labelled IPOB members without sufficient evidence, with some reportedly held in police and military detention facilities for prolonged periods.
He expressed concern over allegations of torture and other forms of inhumane treatment, as well as cases of people who allegedly disappeared after being taken into custody.
Agwu urged human rights organisations to go beyond documenting cases and ensure that victims and their families have access to justice, legal representation and appropriate remedies.
He also called on South-East governors, security agencies, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to work together to address what he described as a culture of impunity allegedly perpetrated by some security personnel in the region.
“We cannot continue to remain silent when people are arrested, detained and allegedly tortured simply because they are suspected of having links with a particular group. Every person has the right to due process, fair hearing and humane treatment, regardless of the allegations against them,” Agwu said.
Amnesty International therefore urged relevant stakeholders and government authorities to take concrete steps to end unlawful abductions, arbitrary detention and killings allegedly carried out by security operatives in the South-East.

The Ruby Wedding Anniversary ceremony, held at the NOBIK International Event Centre in Aba, Abia State, was marked by emotional testimonies, prayers, reflections on marriage, tributes to the couple and renewed vows, as guests celebrated four decades of companionship and family life.
Among the distinguished personalities at the event were Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR and Wife, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti; members of the National and State Assemblies; commissioners; local government chairmen and councillors; Labour Party leaders; members of the ABSU Governing Council; academics, friends and associates of the Elele family.
Delivering the anniversary sermon, guest minister Rev. Prof. Nzorta based his message on 1 Corinthians 2:9, while congratulating Dr. Elelenta and Dr. Melody Elele for successfully completing 40 years of marriage.
The cleric, who disclosed that he has been married for 32 years, described marriage as an institution created by God and drew references from Genesis 2:18 and 2:24, as well as Ephesians 5:25-33.
He emphasised companionship, commitment and mutual love as essential ingredients for a lasting marriage, urging the couple to remain steadfast in their love and faith as they enter another chapter of their marital journey.
Giving his testimony and renewing his marital vows, Dr. Elelenta Nwambuisi Elele took guests through the remarkable story of how his relationship with his wife began, tracing their acquaintance to their childhood years and recounting how their friendship eventually blossomed into marriage.
He recalled that he left home at the age of 23, while Melody was 13, noting that he had known her since she was about five years old because she was from a neighbouring village.
According to him, his journey took a significant turn after he received a scholarship in 1976 to study engineering in the United States.
“I left home at 23 and she was 13. I had known this lady when she was 5 right after the war as she was from the next village. But believe me, when I got a scholarship in 1976 to study engineering in USA. I was surprised when a 13 years old from the next village approached me… I’m a lucky man.
He further recalled an encounter with Melody when she became a college student, saying he asked whether she had a farm and requested that she bring him vegetables from it.
“3 hours later, there was Ugu, Okro, and I looked at her, she was honest.
“So I approached this young lady… I called her mother and sat her down and told her (mother) I like this young lady but she’s too little and there’s nothing I can do. Then the (her) mother said my husband married me when I was 12… Then until 1985…“
Reflecting on four decades of marriage, Dr. Elelenta ended his testimony with a deeply emotional declaration to his wife.
“I love you babe, and I will love you until the day I die“
Dr. Melody Elele also gave an emotional testimony, showering praise on her husband and recounting how she believes their meeting and eventual marriage transformed her life.
Describing her husband affectionately, she said:
“he’s the most handsome man“
She also recalled a recurring childhood dream involving beautiful birds and likened her husband to the bird that eventually came into her life.
“When I was young and I go to bed, I will always have this dream where I would be flying away with beautiful blue and yellow birds every time. Then in 1985 you finally found me and you became that beautiful blue and yellow bird. You swept me off my feet and everything about my life changed. Thank you my love for uplifting me and thank you for taking me to the highest height I can ever imagine and thank you for being a good husband. Thank you for being an amazing father to our 5 children and an amazing brother, an amazing son-in-law and today I promise to continue to love you, I promise to be behind you, I promise to be your backbone, I promise to take care of you in good and bad, but hopefully all good,“ she stated.
Speaking at the anniversary ceremony, Governor Alex Otti used the occasion to reflect not only on marriage and family but also on political conviction, public service and the dangers of divisive narratives.
The Governor said people sometimes embrace narratives without carefully examining the interests behind them, stressing that some narratives presented as collective interests are actually driven by personal ambitions.
“I just want to make one point, and that is our politics in Nigeria, politics in Abia State and politics in Ngwaland. Sometimes, when people craft narratives, a lot of people follow sheepishly, not knowing that the narratives they are crafting are selfish narratives, dressed up as group interests
“All of a sudden, your brother who has been with you, eating with you, becomes your enemy because he has shown up to contest elections. Somebody said, if you don’t want to know who dated your great-grandmother, don’t join politics,” Governor Otti said.
Governor Otti questioned the usefulness of such divisive politics, particularly when it fails to address the everyday challenges confronting citizens, including the cost of goods and the general welfare of the people.
The Governor disclosed that Dr. Elelenta was among the early supporters who believed in his capacity to transform Abia State after listening to him when he entered politics.
He recalled that Dr. Elelenta supported his political aspirations while serving as President of the Association of Ngwa People in the United States, a position that, according to the Governor, exposed him to considerable opposition and persecution from people who disagreed with his decision.
Governor Otti said he had forgiven those who wronged him through divisive political narratives, insisting that such political battles ultimately have little meaning if they do not produce good governance and tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
He condemned the practice of allowing clannish and divisive politics to override competence, merit and the broader public interest.
Governor Otti urged the people to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of past leaders and forebears who, he said, placed the greater good above personal sentiment and material accumulation.
“Our great-grandparents were great people. Think of all of them. That’s why the other day we decided to honour Aguiyi Ironsi. And we will honour more people.
“I honoured Jaja Nwachukwu the other day, and we will keep honouring our people who made sacrifices.
“They were not sentimental; they were not myopic. Some of them, like M.I. Okpara, I understand, didn’t have a house. He could have accumulated all the money, and today he’s gone.
“I tell you one thing: a lot of the money we are all gathering, left, right and centre, we don’t need them. As a banker or former banker, I can tell you that most of the time, when you close your eyes and don’t wake up, that money goes to your enemy.” the Governor stated.
Governor Otti said Dr. Elelenta’s life should serve as an example of the importance of standing firmly by one’s convictions, even in the face of opposition.
“Have conviction; Believe in something. Even if they prosecute you, let them prosecute you because of your belief in something.
“You are dancing around. Today you are here, next tomorrow you are there; they don’t even know where you stand.
“At the end of the day, when important decisions are being made, they are not going to consider you because you can sell out,” Governor Otti stated.
Governor Otti thanked God for preserving Dr. Elelenta and Dr. Melody Elele and for blessing their marriage with children.
He prayed that God would continue to preserve the couple and grant them many more years together, expressing the hope that they would celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary and continue beyond the golden jubilee.
The Governor also paid tribute to Dr. Melody Elele, describing her as an epitome of a virtuous woman who is deeply committed to her family.
He commended her for being a strong pillar of support to her husband and the entire Elele family.
The couple’s first son, Engr. Nkediche Nwambuisi Elele, also paid tribute to his parents, describing his father as a stubborn but kind-hearted man who is capable of winning arguments.
He equally praised his mother for her devotion, sacrifices and unwavering commitment to the family over the years.
Other distinguished personalities who spoke at the event included the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu; Senator Nkechi Nwogu; Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District; Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa; and Dr. Godfrey Achilihu, a school old boy of Dr. Elelenta.
In their separate remarks, the speakers highlighted their longstanding relationships with the Elele family and described Dr. Elelenta Nwambuisi Elele as a custodian of Ngwa culture and heritage.
They also praised his accommodating nature, describing him as a man whose influence extends beyond politics and public office to community, cultural and social development.

As Dr. Elelenta and Dr. Melody Elele renewed their vows before family, friends and distinguished guests, the ceremony closed on a powerful message of love and commitment: that after 40 years, their journey together is not at its end, but entering another promising chapter.

Unmasking The Shameless Sponsor of UEBARI TOPBA (Aka Gani Topba)’s Media Attack On Chief Teeh Harvest Deesi Sunday
A renowned and respected Ogoni leader is about to smear his reputation and expose himself in a bid to pull down the rising reputation of Chief Lesi Maol, whose passion for developing the capacity of Ogoni youths for self-sustainability has now become his undoing, out of envy and jealousy.
This leader, whose name will be published in my next publication if he refuses to toe the path of honour, has been cornering and feasting on government opportunities and largesse meant for the development of Ogoni over the years, appointing and employing only his relatives and cronies into juicy positions at the detriment of other Ogoni youths, unchallenged or confronted out of respect.
I am aware of his clandestine deals, in which he allegedly rakes in billions without impacting any of it on the youths. Rather, he is using the funds to sponsor a campaign of calumny against any rising Ogoni son on the verge of gaining prominence.
Today, his focus is on the towering reputation of the KAGOTE President, Chief Lesi Maol.
Though he, like an ostrich, claims not to be a politician, he lives a flamboyant lifestyle, albeit quietly, so as not to attract public attention.
He has always positioned himself as the prominent figure and the only channel through which every economic accrual, resource and opportunity meant for the development of Ogoni people comes through him only under every government.
For the same reason he pitches Ogonis against elected and appointed sons in government at every opportunity, frustrating their efforts to exercise effective leadership through blackmails and smear campaigns. Many still suffer stigma from those smear campaigns till today.
For several years now, he has been receiving ₦50 million monthly as proceeds from a pipeline surveillance contract on the TNP( Trans Niger Delta Pipeline) through his proxies, who are reportedly not even from Ogoni. He is also receiving five percent (5%) of a negotiated sum with a certain company he is fronting for oil exploration in Ogoniland.
He is yet to explain to the Ogoni people what happened to the 40 employment opportunities ceded to our young graduates by the NNPC during the oil exploration negotiations through the Ogoni Dialogue Committee (ODC), which he facilitated, and of which his own daughter is a beneficiary and number one on the list.
Further investigation revealed that about 18 persons on the list are not indigenes of Ogoni, despite the NNPC employment opportunity being meant solely for Ogoni people.
He solely nominated Uebari Topba (Gani Topba) into the Ogoni Dialogue Committee (ODC) so as to take advantage of his inability to read and write, using him to attack other Ogoni leaders rather than encouraging him to take advantage of adult/non-formal education to educate himself and improve his capacity.
This same Ogoni leader uses proceeds from his deals to lodge in five-star hotels, including the Hilton Hotel in Abuja, and flies business class on international flights without anybody knowing the source of his income.
We are also aware that he is about completing his multi-billion-naira mansion in Old GRA, apart from the massive renovation currently ongoing on his country home, reportedly being carried out by the same contractor handling the construction of one of the health centres sponsored by the NNPC. Could this be a coincidence or an act of God?
This is the singular reason why he is not saying anything about the oil exploration currently going on in parts of Ogoniland.
In due course, Ogoni people will rise up to ask some more pertinent questions about the sources of the money he is using to do all these things, since, according to the facts, he is not helping anyone outside his relatives.
The big question on the lips of Ogoni people is: Why is he using Gani Topba to insult Chief Lesi Maol, who has decided to redeem Ogoni youths from poverty with his hard-earned money, not obtained from Federal or State allocations or government contracts?
Ordinarily, Ogoni had expected this leader to be a bridge for peace among Ogoni youths, but he has rather chosen to become an Ogoni leader who is, as the saying goes, “dancing naked at the marketplace.”
I am equally ready to further undress him with more shocking facts and revelations if he does not stop these anti-Ogoni people antics.
We have credible evidence of his interface and phone calls with some Ogoni youths who tried to caution Uebari Topba (alias Gani Topba), questioning their interest in the matter and advising them to allow Lesi and Gani to “fight.”
The question now is: What does he stand to gain from all the attacks by Gani Topba on Lesi and KAGOTE?
It is very laughable that Chief Lesi Maol is being accused of sabotaging oil resumption in Ogoniland.
If Gani Topba and his paymaster knew the millions of naira Chief Lesi Maol had invested in training and positioning Ogoni youths in various oil and gas-related skills in preparation for the said oil resumption, they would bow their heads in shame.
In the area of entrepreneurship, Lesi Maol has also provided ₦200 million in grants for Ogoni youths who want to do business.
There is also his sponsorship of Science Quiz Competitions in secondary schools across Ogoniland to encourage young Ogoni students to study science-related courses, which are basic requirements in the oil and gas sector.
It is worthy of mention that dozens of Ogoni students are today enjoying Lesi Maol’s scholarships, among several other uncountable positive gestures towards Ogoni youths.
I want to use this medium to inform this leader that, in due time, Ogoni youths will demand the publication of the list of contractors handling various ongoing NNPC projects in Ogoniland, including their scopes of work and costs.
I will also urge Ogoni people to demand details of the bidding and selection processes, including the owners of the companies involved.
This is because if the “goodwill projects” given to the entire Ogoni people by the NNPC to soften the grounds for oil resumption are handled with such a level of secrecy, what is the guarantee that Ogoni youths will be carried along when full-scale oil production starts?
Oil exploration is already going on in parts of Ogoni, yet this leader and his boy, Gani, are pretending not to know and are misleading Ogoni people into believing that dialogue and negotiations are still ongoing.
Ogoni youths will rise up to stop any leader who continues to perpetrate the old-fashioned tendency of greedy leadership.
No such leader will be allowed to continue using the name of Ogoni to enrich himself and his family alone.
We will stop at nothing to expose them, including making public how a book written by Ken Saro-Wiwa was published by this leader without making any reference to Ken.
We will expose these and many other issues in the coming days to unmask the real enemies of the Ogoni people and the youths who do not want the unity of Ogoni youths or any other organised leadership structure to exist in Ogoni.
At this juncture, I passionately appeal to this leader to immediately desist from anything that could bring us back to the dark days of needless bloodshed in Ogoniland.
He should allow the existing peace being enjoyed in Ogoni to continue by allowing Ogoni people to breathe.
A word, they say, is enough for the wise!
